It’s a make-or-break fight for Zurdo and Smith Jr, especially for the Golden Boy-promoted Ramirez. He’s been well-managed during his 14-year professional career, put in with soft opposition, matched in a similar way as Jaime Munguia.

Gilberto Zurdo Ramirez steps into the ring for his first fight at cruiserweight against Joe Smith Jr. tonight, Saturday, October 7, 2023. ‘Zurdo‘ has not fought since suffering a loss to WBA super light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol this past November. Ramirez was expected to fight Gabe Rosado at the start of the year, but badly missed weight for the bout that was canceled. Now, he returns at a new weight class opposite of a former WBO light heavyweight champion in Smith Jr.

After winning the then-vacant WBO light heavyweight title with a majority decision against Maxim Vlasov, Smith Jr. notched one successful defense before attempting to unify with Artur Beterbiev, the WBC and IBF light heavyweight titleholder. Beterbiev finished Smith Jr. inside of two rounds.

When Golden Boy finally threw Zurdo into the deep end of the pool last November against Bivol, he floundered & sunk to the bottom and showed that he lacked the talent to compete at the highest level.

Ramirez looked horrible in his last fight, losing to Dmitry Bivol by a one-sided twelve round decision last November. The performance by Ramirez was so bad that it was hard to see any type of future for him at 175 or cruiserweight, as he’s too slow, and the fighting style that he had depended on in the past, leading with his face, won’t work for him in either division.

This is a fight that Ramirez (44-1, 30 KOs) cannot afford to lose because, unlike Smith, who has massive power and will continue to do well, Zurdo depends on his high punch output & massive size to win. That’s not going to get the job done at cruiserweight, however, because they punch hard and they have equal size as Zurdo.

Ramirez (44-1, 30 KOs) returns to action after suffering the first loss of his professional career against Dmitry Bivol last November. Nearly a full year later, "Zurdo" hopes to get back to his winning ways against a former champion who is also venturing up to cruiserweight for the first time.

Smith Jr. (28-4, 22 KOs) also suffered a loss at the hands of Bivol but won the WBO light heavyweight title in 2021 with a majority decision over Maxim Vlasov. He made one successful title defence before being stopped in the second round by unified champion Artur Beterbiev last June.
